Clueless in the Real World

In the past couple of months Nick and I have discovered how much we have to learn about being "grown ups" in the real world. Things like life insurance, retirement accounts, homeowners insurance, and the latest and greatest, tax deductions. I've been filing my own taxes since I was 16, but between our 4 W-2's and the fact that I'm no longer a student, we got married...blah blah blah...tax season was less than pleasant this year.

We had both received some sub-prime advice on how what to claim on our W-4's, which means our numbers were a little off and led to weeping and gnashing of teeth a couple weeks ago when I first did our taxes. I put off the agony for awhile and then re-figured everything with us filing seperately. Didn't really make a difference. We owe money. Not what I wanted to see at the same time we're paying a year of homeowners insurance and preparing to kiss our hard-earned down payment fund good-bye. My mom promises me things will look better next year when we can claim property tax refunds. And we've gotten all of our W-2's straightened out, so we should be good to go. But right now....I'm not so happy with dear old Uncle Sam.

  1. Taxes are such a pain! I did ours for the second year with Turbo Tax and it was way confusing. We too always seem to have extra jobs or weird stuff to figure - rent info and now homeowner stuff too. The house will help next year - we got a refund this year. Praise God! You never know what's gonna happen though which is what stinks the most. The real world is not all we dreamed it to be!
