Beemer's solution was for him to sleep on our bed.
We vetoed that one.
So instead they've been sleeping on blankets and the throw pillows from our bed. Or anything else soft and squishy they found on the floor. Given Shalai's rather violet history with beds/pillows (she's destroyed 3) I didn't really want her claiming my throw pillows as her own.
We've been on the lookout for the right solution but holee molee have you priced out dog beds recently?? Large bed x 2 = life savings. Ok, maybe not quite but those things are expensive. Especially when you're looking to buy two at the same time.
But then I was meandering the aisles of Costco and low and behold - a dog bed! For $18.69! Big enough for my dogs!
We're referring to this as "the mattress."
I was planning on getting two, but once I pulled it off the rack I realized that we might not actually be able to fit two of these on our bedroom floor and still be able to walk to the dresser and back.
So we decided they could share.
Beemer hated that idea. The first night he had this low grumble/growl with every exhale. I thought it was adorable.
They've slowly been getting used to the idea, but some of the looks Beemer gives Shalai are pretty classic. Shalai could care less that they're touching, but Beemer gets stressed out if so much as their feet touch.
But except for Beemer's sharing issues, they totally love this bed. They both like to lay smack dab in the middle of it when the other one isn't around. And for $18.69 I'm thrilled to save my throw pillows from a sure and certain death.
I found a similar bed at Petsmart for $69.99. We'll call this one a win.

And no, Costco certainly didn't pay us to promote their dog bed. We just happened to find it and love it and wanted to tell you all about it.
I bought the same bed (but in a different color) and love it.. and especially love the price tag. You can't even buy fabric and fill for as cheap as $20! It's such a good deal.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same issue - two 65 lbs dogs and sleeping arrangements can be a challenge. I stumbled across a papasan cushion in a heavy twill for $12.99 at Pier 1 in the clearance section! Perfect dog bed! And plenty of room for both of them to sprawl out. Previous to that we were using old couch cushions cuz we're classy like that!

Nice score! I love Costco! We bought Barley a bed for Christmas from Costco, too, although it's one of the more form-fitting ones with the sides on it (we figured he'd like that one better because he always likes to sleep in small spaces). He LOVES it, and I think it was probably around $20, too. Like you said, win-win! Gotta heart Costco.

hehe.... it makes me laugh that one loves to snuggle and the other doesn't. That's totally Franco and Lola. Lola will not sleep by herself but Franco is a loner. ;)
ReplyDeleteYour pups are so cute. We have two beds in our room (we have a golden retriever and a lab/pyrenees mix), but they always end up sleeping in the same bed curled up together.
ReplyDeleteDecorandthedog - We definitely made Shalai sleep in her kennel for the first year or so that we had her. And then we made her sleep downstairs all by her lonesome. And now they're both in our room. Next step? OUR BED. : )

Right now I'm happy with the fact that Beemer will tolerate the fact that they're on one bed. Although, last night he just stood there and stared Shalai down for about 10 minutes when she was laying in the middle of the bed. : )
Your dogs are adorable! Unfortunately, we allow our dogs to sleep in bed with us. All combined 120 pounds of them. So we wake up with sore backs a lot =P
ReplyDeleteYAY for Costco!! That find is definitely worth a pat on the back. And they are so cute on their new bed! When we got our 2nd dog awhile back, I thought I was going to have to get another bed for her. But luckily she and Dudley started sleeping on the same pillow almost immediately! We got ours from Sam's Club (practically the same as Costco) for around $25 I think, which was way cheaper than anywhere else.

I've found dog beds for similar prices at Big Lots.
Our dog (black lab) used to sleep on the floor next to my side of the bed. There is about 2 feet between my side and the wall. If I had to get up in the night that dog had a 98% chance of either being stepped on or kicked in the head, black in a black room being hard to see. Yet the dog continued to sleep there.
