Saturday was completely booked for both of us, but Sunday we tackled the raised bed in our backyard, totally determined to make something (beautiful) out of it. We snagged a couple more boulders for crazy-cheap (thanks to a landscape design business-owning friend) and used those to finish off the raised bed. Nick had this cut out and reshaped in no time, adding about 5 rocks to the end of the bed.
Since we have a knack for neglecting our plants we wanted to give them every possible advantage to keep them alive. So next up was rototilling the entire bed. A huge thanks goes out to our friends who own their own rototiller and were nice enough to let us borrow it. That sucker was heavy though, and Nick definitely had his work cut out for him to keep it from running through our neighbor's fence.
After just a couple of hours we had a re-shaped, rototilled ready-for-some-new-life bed.
And then we went out and spent our life's savings on plants.
Not really.
We were actually really good about keeping the total down and reminding ourselves that it's going to take a long time to actually fill the bed with plants.
But we did get this beauty, which I can't wait to tell you more about.
We also gave the dog wheelbarrow rides around the backyard. I believe this may have been more fun for us than for her.
We'll talk more about plants tomorrow, before this turns into the longest post ever written. Currently that record is still held by the one about the dog's sleeping habits. Riveting content around these parts, folks.
Anybody else spend their weekend covered in dirt?
oh that picture of your hubby tilling cracks me up! we have two massive gardens and we spend a lot of time tilling with ours. looking great! we worked on landscaping our yard last year and it made a huge difference. ask others for perennials when they go to split them up. i get a ton of free flowers this way. keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteLove the dog in the wheelbarrow! Too funny! I'm impressed she stayed in.
ReplyDeleteNo dirt for me this week-end...pretty bridesmaid dress for me!
I feel the pain with the rototiller! LOL We have one too and it's like walking a rhinocerous on a leash...they're just SO STINKIN' HEAVY and wild! But they do great work. I spent a tad bit of time in the garden...pulling massive amounts of weeds. Fun times. If you hard is a little shady I would TOTALLY recommend hostas...not everyone loves them but the multiply like rabbits and can be easily divided...and fill out very quickly. I, personally, have about a bajillion varieties (I have an addiction),lots of coloring varigations that look nice. I'm more of a plant it and forget it girl,so they're perfect. ;-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful weekend! I'm not so good with plants myself, I tend to either over water them or neglect them. I think I need to find a happy medium! That plant (hydrangea?) looks SO pretty though! Can't wait to see more pictures.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing - rock and all! My rock all take a 2 hour ride from SE MN. We know a number of people with piles in the field for taking. Shasta daisy (Becky variety) grows tall and thick. I also have a lavendar plant that grows like crazy. Likes partial sun and smells divine.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it sick how much you can drop on plants? They don't seem to be that expensive when you are putting them into the cart....but the total always floors me!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you guys made tons on progress on the space in a day. And I love the dog pic...they are never as easily amused as we are!
I love that your husband is smiling and able to lift a wheelbarrow after doing that rototilling (sp?). Gotta love those hydrangeas. They grow great in Western WA. I look forward to seeing your backyard come together. :)
ReplyDeleteit's looking great! LOVE hydrangeas :). Can't wait to see what you are doing with them!
ReplyDeleteThe in progress post has me excited to read the conclusion. Kudos to Nick for being able to lift the wheelbarrow after using the rototiller. My dad has the exact same one, I think and it always feels like it's about to break free from your grip.
