booklist 2012

Last year I read some really great books. Here's just a few of my favorites -

Delivering Happiness, Onward, Linchpin, The Millionaire Next Door and the Help.

I would highly recommend all of these, but if I had to pick just one I'd have to say Linchpin by Seth Godin is the winner. Very thought provoking and a great read if you want to work on your career.

(Next pick would be Onward by Howard Schultz. I know you didn't ask but I loved this book, so I had to tell you. Subtitled "How Starbucks fought for its life without losing its soul." Great great read. I cried. I don't think business books are supposed to make you cry.)

But now I'm looking for some new reads for the new year. I'm going to read 24 books this year, and here we are one week into January and I haven't even started. (Way to go, Cindy!)

If you've read some great books recently (or heck, a long time ago!) I'd love to add it to my list. Any ideas for me?

  1. I'm reading the Hunger Games trilogy and I cannot put them down. I sneak into my room at all hours of the day and night to read a chapter. I am not generally a sci fi fan (although I like Harry Potter), but these are great.

  3. I enjoyed the Hunger Games trilogy, too. I also liked Girl in Translation. There are others on my Goodreads boards if you are interested.

I really liked The Help, too.

  4. Like the other posters said above, the Hunger Games Trilogy. I'm on book two and addicted! Before the Hunger Games, I was ready Nicholas Sparks. Good, sappy life/romance books. They will make you cry though! I started The Chronicles of Narnia and cannot get into it so its been sitting by my bed for 3 or 4 months. I end up picking it back up and reading it when i have nothing else to read.

  5. Did you ever read Eat Pray Love? Read it and then come to India with me... even if it's really cliche. Then read Committed, by Elizabeth Gilbert.
I'll search my bookshel on Saturday and give you a couple more. :)

  7. Man, I think it's time to find out what the Hunger Games are all about!! I read Eat Pray Love 2 years ago. Loved it, but never saw the movie...maybe I need to add that to the list, too!

  8. What a great goal! My big read of the year was The Count of Monte Cristo. It's good and the satisfaction of finishing that beast of a book was worth the two months + of time I put into it. So if you're looking for a classic to devour, I'd recommend it.

I'd also recommend Les Miserables, even if it's the abridged version. (I can't judge because I've only read the abridged). It is such a compelling story!

I read several others this year too, including The Help, which strangely enough, I actually preferred the movie version over the book. That has to be a first for me.

  9. Hunger Games and Room were my favorites of the year. If you haven't read them yet, you definitely should!

  10. The most recent book I read was Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol (I forgot I had it for a long time so I read it over the holidays).

I'm kind of a young adult book addict, so I really loved the Vampire Academy series, but that may not be your genre.

  11. I'm going against the masses. I thought the Hunger Games were so stinking weird. I did, however, read all of them..mainly because I kept thinking they were going to get awesome because everyone loved them. Not so much for me.

I really enjoyed the Pioneer Woman's "From Black Heels to Tractor Wheels."

For mindless reading may I suggest Something Borrowed and Something Blue.

I also thought Tina Fey's Bossypants was quite entertaining.

  12. Cindy,

I am an avid reader and prefer books to the internet. My most recent reads include: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand (author of Seabiscuit) and Killing Lincoln by Bill O'Reilly.

Wishing you and Nick a happy, healthy 2012!

    Deborah
