dare to diy: table setting

Nick and I were going to host (an early) Thanksgiving for the Germann family and I was having fun planning out how the table would look. Unfortunately, Nick's mom got sick on Monday....his dad got sick on Tuesday and I got sick on Wednesday. Plan foiled. Instead, Nick drove the thawed turkey over to his parents' house Friday night and his sisters took over and created a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner!

So while that (imagined) tablescape never came to life, I still wanted to get my Dare to DIY on and put something together for a(n imagined) dinner party.

Everything on the table was stuff I already had around the house, and I like how it came together. But to be honest, I need some practice putting fancy tables together. I got a little bit stumped and feel like it's missing something.

So, friends, if you were hosting a dinner party and your table currently looked like this, what would you do to finish it off? (Other than, you know, take your photos with natural daylight. Whoops.)

Now with the table looking pretty I want to have someone over for dinner! Any takers?

Check out the four lovely Dare to DIY hosts and their gorgeous projects. I'm getting inspired to get a little more crafty for next week's challenge - homemade gifts!

  1. I'm the last one to be asking about this...maybe a red or silver table runner to add a little extra color and dimension?

I suck at table decorating because I don't own much to do so and I'm not really into buying new stuff for fake parties. First world problems.

  2. I think your table look great! I think Michelle is right in that adding a runner would create a little more interest. The great thing about your table is that there is actually room for the food!

  3. I think it looks so pretty! Very elegant.

And you know I adore your dining room. Just so classy.

Sorry about the sickness. It's really going around! Hope you are all feeling better.

    Thanks for linking up, friend.

  4. I'd do a little bit of greenery - maybe one garland all the way around the centerpieces, and then add some small pinecones for texture (you could always spray paint them if you didn't want them to be brown).

  5. Bummer on catching the bug that's going around - hope you're feeling better.I like the cranberries you used for the vase filler.

Just stumbled upon your blog from Dare to DIY - and then put together that you're in the Twin Cities area from the YHL post. I happened to be at the same book signing and live in the metro area too! Looking forward to following along on your DIY/flipping adventures. My husband and I would love to try a flip someday (after we are done slowly renovating our own house that is).

  6. I know what's missing....Gluten! Are those cranberries gluten free? :)

  7. I love the look of the cranberries! I really need to invest in some for my table and decorations!

  8. I like Michelle's idea of a table runner, but then I think the only thing it's really missing is the finishings - napkins, cutlery, glasses/stemware. Maybe a little greenery for texture a depth, but I love a simple table setting.

  9. i am also the worst at tablescapes. I never know how to put one together. I am going to jump on the runner bandwagon though, I think that would look really nice. And, my rule of thumb when all else fails is to light a whole bunch of candles and clump them together. Everyone loves candles....true story!

  10. I think the trick to making it look magazine-worthy is to layer. You've done that with the plates, but not the textiles. Maybe add a runner down the middle? And then adding pretty linen napkins under the plates. I am not very good at tables either. Yours already looks great! :)

  11. Nice start! I'm weighing in sort of "after the fact" but instead of a runner, what about table cloth, rotated 45 degrees from the first one? Maybe decorative napkins, and maybe put the two hurricanes in the middle, and place the votives around them, with some other figurines/greenery sprigs, etc.
